Home Insulation

Loft Insulation
Loft insulation acts like a blanket it traps rising heat in the house. Without loft insulation you could be losing as much as 15% of your heat through your roof. Loft insulation is a simple and effective way to reduce your heating bills. You can even do it yourself with a bit of planning.

How Loft Insulation works
Loft insulation materials work by preventing the movement of heated air through the insulation material. The fibres of matting insulation trap the air within it. For the matting to be effective, the weave should not be over stretched or compressed as the structure trapping the air may be destroyed. Loose fill insulation materials like vermiculite are very poor conductors of heat and, being small, form a near impervious thermal barrier.

Loft Insulation

How much Loft Insulation do I Need? To meet current UK Building Regulations you will need 270mm of mineral wool loft insulation. Thats 100mm between the ceiling joists and 170mm laid over the joists. If you want to work out show much oft insulation you have simply push a tape measure down the side of a piece of loft insulation until it hits the plasterboard ceiling and read off the measurement.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is insulation that is injected into the cavity between the inner and outer leaves of brickwork that make up the external wall. This space is normally occupied by nothing but fresh air and rubble. Up to 33% is of heat is lost through our walls though not having cavity wall insulation.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation can be added to most houses with cavity walls. Fitting involves drilling a series of holes in the outer leaf of the outside wall and blowing the insulation into the cavity. The holes can be sealed again leaving little or no trace of the work.
